Bizarre, unsettling, and sometimes dreadful, the Rusty Lake games are one-of-a-kind puzzle titles that have flooded both the Google Play Store and the App Store on mobile over the past decade. Since the early 2020s, though, the eponymous Dutch studio has adopted a slower pace, releasing more thoughtful, carefully crafted experiences on smartphones and PC alike. I have fond memories of the time I spent playing The Past Within, for instance, and I'm really eager to finally jump into Servant of the Lake when I get the chance.
All this to say that, despite not having played it yet, I'm already in awe listening to the gorgeous new soundtrack composer Victor Butzelaar released across all platforms today. Building on a full decade of previous entries, the musician sounds more intimate, delicate, and ethereal than ever before. Spanning 27 tracks across roughly 46 minutes of runtime, Servant of the Lake hits right in the feels with its longer cuts, like the Main Theme, "Searching the Attic" or "Looking for the Cat". I love how Butzelaar lets his instruments breathe—how you can sometimes hear his foot on the piano pedal and all the little imperfections that come with live recordings.
