Tracking new VGM releases since 2022

Spanning four volumes, the soundtrack to over the hill is an unexpected ambient masterpiece

Trading race tracks for slow-paced off-roading, over the hill delivers a surprisingly ethereal, ambient score.

The developers behind Art of Rally and Golden Lap are still very much into cars. They've just decided to slow things down and leave the track behind in favor of off-the-beaten-path adventures. In over the hill (lowercase mandatory), you explore gorgeous, vibrant landscapes behind the wheel of a vintage 4x4. The game is out now on Steam and heading to consoles in 2027. Its soundtrack just hit streaming platforms, and it's an absolute standout.

Helmed by Art of Rally composer Vyacheslav Anatolevich "Slava" Koristov alongside newcomer Giacomo Giunchedi, the score spans four volumes (40 tracks) that lean heavily into ambient textures with almost liminal undertones. It evokes Rhys Lindsay's stellar work on Exo One (go check it out!). Giunchedi's contributions feel slightly more forward and Americana-coded, yet they still fit the game's aesthetic like a glove.

If you end up falling in love with the score as much as I did, Serenity Forge is already taking pre-orders for a 2LP vinyl edition slated to ship in March 2027.
