Saying goodbye to Destiny 2: the soundtrack for the final update is here

Destiny 2 players got the news about ten days ago: Bungie's live-service game will now only receive security patches. No new DLCs or expansions are on the horizon. Nor is a potential Destiny 3, according to reports from the gaming press. From now on, the American studio's focus is shifting toward Marathon, the extraction shooter launched last March, which still has to prove it can retain its players, however passionate they may be.

This morning, Bungie greenlit the deployment of Monument of Triumph, the very last patch for Destiny 2. As usual, it comes with a new batch of tracks composed by the regular team: C Paul Johnson, David Kidd, Greg Ogan, Jason Walsh, Josh Mosser, Martin O'Donnell, Max Davidoff-Grey, Michael Hartigan, Michael Salvatori, Michael Sechrist, Rotem Moav, and Skye Lewin.

According to Nadia Wheaton, Bungie's former audio supervisor, most of these musicians were let go over the last few months, undoubtedly in anticipation of the direction the 2017 MMO was taking. Now owned by Sony, Bungie seems forced to align with the publisher's habits of outsourcing its music to industry stars—in Marathon's case, Son Lux frontman Ryan Lott.

i have complicated feelings about Marathon's music, Bungie chose to outsource the game’s music instead of using the in-house team. that decision makes it hard for me to separate my feelings about the marathon OST when a good portion of the in-house music team got laid off (obviously related tbh)

Even though I personally haven't played much Destiny 2 and its music doesn't particularly resonate with me, I know from playing a ton of MMOs how deeply the music that accompanies our daily adventures can stay with us. The franchise leaves behind a substantial musical legacy: about fifteen albums are available to stream across all platforms (including the original Destiny). However, I hope Bungie will follow Blizzard's lead and make its music available on storefronts like Bandcamp, so fans can permanently keep the tracks that meant so much to them.
