XBOX certainly has a sense of timing. Just 24 hours before the release of DOOM: The Dark Ages - Revelations—the DLC for the latest installment in the franchise, announced just last month at the Summer Game Fest—id Software's parent company announced a massive restructuring. Over the coming months, 3,200 positions will be cut across XBOX studios, including 1,600 effective immediately. The DOOM developers are part of the carnage. My heart goes out to the teams who poured years of passion into reviving the legacy of the grandfather of fast-paced FPS games. You can read more about the layoffs over on Aftermath.
As a result, Revelations is the first, and likely only, DLC that DOOM: The Dark Ages will receive. It is a beefy expansion that sends the Slayer into a purgatory from which he can only escape, as you might expect, by turning demons into mincemeat with the help of new weapons and new allies.
For this DLC, id Software once again called upon Finishing Move Inc., the studio already behind the music for The Dark Ages. The quartet delivers a slightly more sophisticated performance on Revelations, featuring more electronic textures and a tighter production. While I am still not entirely sold on the drum parts—which feel pretty bland overall—I can already see exactly how this energy will fuel the frantic action of the Slayer's new adventure.
DOOM: The Dark Ages - Revelations launches later today on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
