Originally hitting arcade cabinets in June 1990, GP Rider eventually made its way to the Master System three years later, securing its place as one of SEGA’s most mythic soundtracks for speed-hungry gamers. Composed by Takenobu Mitsuyoshi (who recently graced Denshattack!), Hiro, Yasuhiro Takagi, Koichi Namiki, and George Gershwin, the soundtrack is now available on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, and other platforms. A CD is also available via Japanese import.
As is often the case with these kinds of projects, the album features tracks from various versions of the game. We start by discovering the arcade versions of cult favorites like "Time Attack" or "The Perfect Power," before diving into the Master System and Game Gear arrangements (where the game launched in 1994). It is an absolute marvel of electronic music that squeezed every last drop out of the era’s audio chips to deliver a diverse, high-octane score with a top-notch production.
Last month, SEGA celebrated another milestone: the 35th anniversary of Sonic, who was also treated to a gift album—a retrospective of the most legendary tracks from the franchise's latest games.
