Some of my best musical discoveries definitely happen when I'm catching up on releases, trying to make sure nothing has slipped through the cracks. That was exactly the case last night with Skigill. What makes this quirky bullet hell / survivors-like game stand out is that it takes place entirely within a giant skill tree.
The new game from the creator of Master Key (which shares a lot of similarities with Tunic), Skigill once again features a soundtrack composed in France by Noé Guiton, who clearly knows his stuff when it comes to 16-bit music.
Each theme highlights one of the game's characters, who, as you can imagine, have plenty of personality. He is a composer whose work I was unfamiliar with until now, but whose career I will be watching closely. You can really tell he grew up listening to the SNK Sound Team, and he beautifully captures the melodic ingenuity of that era. A real treat!
