Tracking new VGM releases since 2022

The Rubato soundtrack is like an all-you-can-eat buffet that won't make you sick

Developed by a solo creator, Rubato is a quirky retro-looking game where the goal is to collect as many items as possible scattered throughout the levels. At first glance, there is nothing very original about it. And yet, you only need to look at a few screenshots to realize that dconn's game is anything but ordinary. Shifting perspectives, changing art styles, overlapping intriguing cutscenes… there is much more to Rubato than meets the eye.

The soundtrack, also composed by Dylan "dconn" Connolly, is cut from the same cloth. No two tracks sound the same. While the shared foundation is neo-retro music, the composer draws inspiration from city pop, breakbeat, JRPGs, and even creepy, Silent Hill-style ambient music. Unclassifiable, always surprising, and above all, never redundant.
