Orbitals taps anime legend Mami Ayukawa for a striking opening theme

Shapefarm's upcoming co-op title Orbitals is leaning hard into 80s anime nostalgia, enlisting legendary vocalist Mami Ayukawa for its opening and ending themes.

Particularly anticipated by co-op gaming fans, Orbitals is gearing up for launch by revealing its opening theme, “~Accelerating Destiny~ (加速する運命).” This announcement might have seemed routine were it not for a name as prestigious as Mami Ayukawa! The Japanese singer, who lent her voice to countless iconic anime openings in the 1980s—including Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam—makes her grand return for both the opening and the yet-unveiled ending theme of Orbitals. You can listen to the track right now on your favorite streaming platform!

Shapefarm’s game makes no secret of its love and inspiration for 1980s Japanese anime, and securing Ayukawa-san for the soundtrack confirms that the studio is pulling out all the stops to appeal to millennials who grew up on those classics.

“I’m truly happy and honored to have had the opportunity to sing the theme song for Orbitals,” Ayukawa shares in a press release. “I poured all of the soul and love that I’ve woven into my music since the 1980s into this song. I sincerely hope that these feelings will reach the hearts of everyone who enjoys the game.”

“Collaborating closely with Mami Ayukawa throughout the creation of Orbitals' opening and ending themes has been an incredible honor,” says Shapefarm’s Audio Director Christian Wellbo. “Among all the amazing anime music of the era that inspired our game, her songs stand among its most iconic. I hope this collaboration resonates with longtime fans while also opening the door for a new generation to discover her extraordinary music.”

Alongside the single's release, label Laced Records has already opened pre-orders for a 7-inch vinyl featuring both tracks performed by Mami Ayukawa.

Orbitals (featuring a score crafted by Falk & Klou) launches on September 3, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2.
