As previously announced by Basiscape—the music production studio founded by Sakimoto himself—the original soundtrack for Veritas Tales: Witch of the Dark Castle is now available for purchase on Steam and iTunes, as well as streaming across all major platforms (though Tidal and Qobuz are unfortunately missing from the lineup).
Developed solo over six years by former Vanillaware art director Yoshio Nishimura, Veritas Tales isn't your typical retro JRPG. Hand-drawn from top to bottom, the game wears its Choose Your Own Adventure influences proudly on its sleeve as an homage to classic tabletop fantasy RPGs. While overlooked by major outlets upon its release on July 9, Veritas Tales: Witch of the Dark Castle shines brightest through its music, composed by Nishimura's longtime friend and collaborator, Hitoshi Sakimoto.
Best known to gamers for his iconic work on Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, and his masterclass score for Final Fantasy XII, Sakimoto is also the mastermind behind Basiscape, the studio responsible for nearly every Vanillaware soundtrack (Odin Sphere, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, Unicorn Overlord...).
True to form, Sakimoto delivers 13 intricate, Celtic-infused orchestral tracks that give full flight to his melodic mastery. Once again, this is far from your typical JRPG soundtrack.
This release caps off a stacked week for video game music drops. Hit indie games Look Outside and UNBEATABLE both made their streaming debuts, while Nintendo finally shared preview tracks from the upcoming Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave on its dedicated app.
