ATLUS Drops the Original Persona Soundtrack to Kick Off the Series' 30th Anniversary

The Japanese studio is getting a head start on the 30th anniversary of the now-iconic franchise—a spin-off of Shin Megami Tensei. Revelations: Persona, the inaugural entry released in 1996, was the first in a long line of mainline titles and various spin-offs.

Even 30 years ago, ATLUS's sound team was committed to breaking the musical molds of the JRPG genre with a soundtrack blending rock and jazz fusion. The composition features a roster that has contributed to almost every entry in the series since: Shoji Meguro, Ryota Kozuka, Hidehito Aoki, Kenichi Tsuchiya, and Misaki Okibe. Vocalist Yumi Kawamura lends her voice to the most upbeat tracks of this 67-song OST—which are actually taken from the 2009 PSP remaster.

As the student who surpassed the master, Persona has become a more widely known franchise than SMT over time, especially following the release of Persona 5 in 2017. Having built a massive fanbase since, ATLUS has launched an ambitious project to remake previous titles. Announced in 2025, Persona 4 Revival still doesn't have a release date. As for the direction the series will take with its next installment, your guess is as good as mine—but this anniversary should be a great opportunity for the studio to finally tell us more, nearly 10 years after Persona 5's debut.

Last year, ATLUS took a different path with Metaphor: ReFantazio, an original JRPG praised by critics, particularly for its music. A world tour is currently underway to experience the OST live. Most Persona soundtracks are available on vinyl via iam8bit.
