The stars are aligning: as I’ve just finished the splendid 007 First Light (and am eagerly awaiting the release of its soundtrack by The Flight), IO Interactive is finally pushing the big green button to release the OST for its latest Hitman trilogy.
The music is 100% crafted by Niels Bye Nielsen, who has been working in VGM for nearly 20 years and has also worked on albums for Steve Vai and Devin Townsend.
Much like the Danish studio’s brand-new title, the HITMAN World of Assassination soundtrack pays tribute to cult spy movie tracks. Often understated, it allows players to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of each level and plan their next move. As a worthy successor to Jesper Kyd, electronic music also plays a major role in several high-tension tracks, kicking in particularly during shootouts or chase scenes.
The soundtrack is being distributed across platforms by Laced Records, who has previously released the vinyl editions for earlier major Hitman installments. I wouldn't be surprised if a new boxset dedicated to World of Assassination gets announced in the coming days.
