More often than not, when a studio wants to take its own crack at a hit game, it makes the mistake of sticking too closely to the source material. How many Celeste clones have we seen blatantly copying either the art style or Lena Raine's beloved OST? Fortunately, Dash n Cry: Bursting cannot be filed under this category.
Boasting colorful visuals, this precision platformer released last month by Painful Smile and Burning Goat Studio handed over its music to Brazilian composer Mariano Telles—someone I hadn't encountered before. A trained guitarist, Telles is certainly a skilled player, but he doesn't limit the sound palette of the Dash n Cry: Bursting OST to six-string melodies alone. Despite drawing clear inspiration from Celeste, the game really doesn't sound anything like it—which is a win, if you ask me! Finding its own voice is even more important in a world where thousands of games drop each month.
Mariano Telles' music heads in unexpected directions, such as on "Rainbow Palette," a track that marries a blissful steelpan sound with twirling guitars and a syncopated drum pad rhythm. It's a welcome surprise for a game that looks just as fun as it sounds playful. You can try the demo for free on Steam if that piques your interest!
