You’ve probably never heard of this game, and that’s completely normal. A solo project by jack-of-all-trades apprentice dev Leah Marie Butcher, Rail Spirits is, as the name suggests, a rail shooter with a roguelike twist that is still in very early development. You can follow her dev journey on her blog.
Likely to get some initial feedback, the programmer released the first tracks from her game on streaming platforms this week under the alias "left mouse button." I loved it. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but it’s creative, inspired—drawing heavily from Stranger Things-style synthwave, John Carpenter, and the like. It’s rare that I stumble upon such polished debut OSTs, especially for a game that hasn't even launched yet. She's definitely one to watch!
I’d also like to take this opportunity to remind you that here at NOWPLAYING, I don’t just focus on AAA titles or trendy indies. I’m also committed to highlighting the work of up-and-coming artists when I find their work compelling—and that is exactly the case here!
