Released earlier this year, *Mixtape* has my name written all over it… Thing is I haven't had the chance to dive in just yet. A narrative game set in the '90s, sporting gorgeous cel-shaded visuals, and centered around teens and music? Sign me up already. Today, developer Beethoven & Dinosaur and publisher Annapurna Interactive released a companion album to the soundtrack. *The Dark Castle* is billed as Van Slater's debut EP, and you can give it a spin right now on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and more.

Who the hell is Van Slater, you might ask? Well, as mentioned, I haven't played the game yet, but I do know Slater is one of protagonist Stacey Rockford's best friends. Judging by the EP's artwork and overall aesthetic, I'd wager he's the nerdiest of the bunch. Spanning five tracks, *The Dark Castle* unfolds like a D&D campaign, complete with a narrator-slash-dungeon-master rambling over ominous synth work that gradually morphs from high-fantasy score to full-blown electro banger territory.

I didn't drop Justice's name into the headline just for clicks. The French Touch duo's DNA is instantly recognizable on the opening cut, and even more so on "The Dead Fear Not Death," which could easily pass for a *†* (*Cross*) B-side. Much like [the main game's soundtrack](https://nowplaying.cool/the-mixtape-score-is-out-just-in-time-for-your-summer-road-trips/), the EP was produced by studio leads Johnny Galvatron and Josh Abrahams.

Speaking of Justice, the legendary French duo was recently announced as [the lead composers for *GTA VI*](https://nowplaying.cool/justice-confirmed-as-the-gta-vi-composers-listen-to-the-first-single-now/).
