Tracking new VGM releases since 2022

The Mixtape score is out, just in time for your summer road trips

I haven't played Mixtape yet, but it's bound to happen since everything about this narrative game speaks to me. A 90s teen coming-of-age story centered around music... it's right up my alley! In addition to the many licensed tracks featured in the game by Australian developer Beethoven and Dinosaurs (playlist here), we also get to enjoy a score composed by Josh Abrahams, who previously worked on the studio's last title, The Artful Escape.

It is a soundtrack perfectly tailored to this nostalgic teenage trip, moving away from guitars to favor retro-sounding synthesizers. While Johnny Galvatron, the mastermind behind the project, co-signed a few tracks, you won't find any original songs in this score—the studio likely preferred to let DEVO, The Smashing Pumpkins, or Joy Division set the tone for the highlights of Stacey Rockford and her friends' adventures.

Josh Abrahams, who composed most of the tracks for Mixtape, is an Australian musician who actually cut his teeth back in the 90s. As the founder of the duo Future Sound of Melbourne (FSOM), he, like Johnny Galvatron, pursued ahead with a solo music career before transitioning into scoring for films, television, theater, and, ultimately, video games.

Mixtape is available now on PC, PS5, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch.
