FTL composer Ben Prunty makes his comeback with the Subnautica 2 soundtrack, out now

Despite a rocky development road, we've finally made it: one of Steam's most wishlisted games is finally making its early access debut. And even though composer Ben Prunty has already announced on Bluesky that more tracks will be added to the Subnautica 2 soundtrack over time, 21 tracks are already available on YouTube and YouTube Music.

As of writing, I'm unsure whether it'll make its way to other streaming platforms before the 1.0 release—I'll keep an eye out and update the article if need be.

Like the game, this soundtrack is also a work in progress. This means it will grow as Subnautica 2 Early Access is developed. We will add more tracks over time at a regular cadence, leading up to a full soundtrack at the 1.0 release in about 2-3 years. Additionally, this soundtrack will increase in price as more tracks are added.

The American composer, whose legendary FTL: Faster Than Light score remains one of the most-streamed soundtracks on Spotify 14 years after its release, is no stranger to Unknown Worlds' franchise. In 2021, he composed the music for Subnautica: Below Zero, the icy spin-off of the famous underwater survival game.

It is a true pleasure to dive back into the American composer's sensitive electronica, which will naturally accompany players through their adventures for hundreds, if not thousands, of hours. Unfortunately, if you were planning to pick up the album on Bandcamp, Ben Prunty has confirmed that the soundtrack will only be available for purchase via Steam. "Unfortunately I wasn't able to secure the rights to the soundtrack this time, so it won't be coming to Bandcamp. I am being compensated for soundtrack sales, however!" he tells his fans on Bluesky.
