# For some reason, SimCity is the Nintendo Music drop of the week

Nintendo sure has its own way of picking the next addition to its music streaming service. Deep down, I'm pretty sure its publishing strategy involves a giant spinning wheel filled with random games, and they go with whichever title the needle lands on. And here we are, on August 21, 2026, opening our Nintendo Music app, excited to learn what soundtrack was just added to the service, only to see [it's that SNES *SimCity* game from 1991](https://music.nintendo.com/en-US/playlist/5439735f-af61-4033-8f26-b46be322461d/?redirectTo=lp).

Okay, I'm just playing the smartass right now—it actually is kind of a big deal. Mind you, the series original entry debuted on PC back in the day, but this console port holds a special place in gaming history. Don't even ask me how you're supposed to play that kind of game with a controller, let alone an SNES pad. Yet, the inaugural video game by Maxis paved the way for countless entries up to 2013\. That's right: we haven't seen any trace of *SimCity* for thirteen years.

Anyhoo, the nostalgic and the curious can now dive into the soundtrack, which comprises 21 tracks for about 23 minutes of music. Even if the SNES had its limitations regarding sound quality, you can already guess the overall musical direction the American studio would follow later on with *SimCity 2000* and, much later, *The Sims*. However, the score wasn't actually written by American composers for that port, but by Nintendo's own Soyo Oka, who had just been hired by the publisher back then.

Last week, Nintendo released [the full soundtrack to *Super Mario Sunshine*](https://nowplaying.cool/heatwave-alert-the-super-mario-sunshine-ost-lands-on-nintendo-music/) as the game was added to the GameCube games collection for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.
