Austin Wintory surprises with the prog rock soundtrack for The Spell Brigade

An intriguing shift for the composer, recently awarded at the GRAMMYs for his Sword of the Sea soundtrack. Primarily known for his majestic orchestrations, Austin Wintory teams up with his long-time assistant, Dallas Crane, to deliver a surprising soundtrack blending medieval atmosphere with progressive rock.

A fairly short album for a co-op survivors-like, yet a striking addition to the American composer's discography. You can tell the two musicians had a blast in long jam sessions finding the right drum sound and guitar chords to drive the frantic action of Bolt Blaster Games' title. Other musicians lent a hand as well—all of whom are credited on the album's Bandcamp page.

I'm always on the hunt to try wacky things, and so when Hans Jacobs / Bolt Blaster Games approached me with the lure of a score encouraging a strange mashup of medieval fantasy and drunken, clumsy classic rock, I was instantly on board. On top of that, I thought this would be an amazing chance to tag team a project with my longtime assistant Dallas Crane. Dallas has been a core part of my team for nearly a decade and the chance to act as co-writers was a tremendous joy!

This new album comes out just weeks after Austin Wintory released the soundtrack to The House of Hikmah, available here.
