Alone in the Dark, released on DOS in 1992, is a survival horror landmark. Developed in Lyon, France, the Infogrames game has been remade twice—first in 2008, and more recently in 2024 featuring actors David Harbour and Jodie Comer. Yet, neither of these modernized iterations matched the impact of the original, whose soundtrack by Philippe Vachey left a lasting impression.
Not only was it one of the first games to feature 3D characters over pre-rendered backgrounds, but Alone in the Dark also boasted a soundtrack as ambitious as it was impressive, at a time when sound cards struggled to deliver decent audio quality. This new album compiles tracks from both the floppy disk and CD versions of the game, the latter offering superior sound quality. In fact, you can clearly hear the shift in production quality from one track to the next.
Alone in the Dark was one of the earliest psychological horror games, released in 1992 and heavily inspired by the universe of H.P. Lovecraft.
This restored soundtrack edition brings together both the original CD audio tracks and the FM OPL synthesis versions created for the early PC release.
Part of the music heard here comes directly from the original AdLib / Sound Blaster FM compositions used during development, reconstructed and remastered from the historical material.
Rather than a remake, this project was conceived as a restoration: preserving the atmosphere, silence, tension and strange melancholy that defined the original game experience.
The soundtrack moves between exploration, isolation, combat and hidden presence — reflecting the fragmented descent into the world of Derceto Manor.

After Alone in the Dark launched his career, Vachey continued to compose for video games throughout the 90s. Many fondly remember his fantastic scores for Little Big Adventure and its sequel, Twinsen's Odyssey. The composer has since rearranged and re-orchestrated these soundtracks for an album titled Little Big Adventure Symphonic Suite, which is available on Bandcamp and all major streaming platforms.
